To Build A Fire....

I’m not exactly sure what to say about “To Build a Fire”. I enjoyed this story and found myself drawn in to this “crazy” situation. I didn’t enjoy this story as much as “The Open Boat”, but I do see some similarities in them. They both dealt with nature and overcoming horrifying circumstances. Both writers did an excellent job of using vivid details (almost too much for me to handle). The idea of killing the dog made me cringe; I was relieved that it didn’t come to that!
The fact that this man was by himself in the freezing cold irritated me more than anything else in the story. Everyone knows not to go out when it’s that cold!!!! The ending was a bit sad, but I expected it nonetheless. I wouldn’t go as far as to say he deserved it, but I would say it was his fault.
“To Build a Fire” was definitely interesting…..

  1. I actually did enjoy this story. It was easier to read than The Open Boat in my opinion. Some of the vivid details made me cringe as well, such as when he was trying to start a fire and he was burning the flesh of his hand. That grossed me out! The whole idea of him killing the dog was crazy to me as well.
I was also pretty irritated at the man when he went out in 75 degrees below zero outside. How crazy do you have to be to not realize that it is too cold to be outside for a long period of time when it is that cold! Although it is really sad, I would also agree that it is the man's fault that he died, he should have realized that it was dangerously cold outside and he would most likely die if he was outside for a long period of time.
